Back then if you were on the men's swim team in high school it was all nude men.  The women were allowed to cover up though.  It was ok for a woman to see a man naked, but not the other way around.  My local gym used to have a communal shower, but it got bought out by some corporate morality whatever, so they completely changed what the shower looks like.  And an undefinied you better not do something we wouldn't like.

We even had open showers at the boys club/girls club. The girls were allowed to sneak a peek. Now us guys would get a beat down.

I think it all comes down to freedom. We had the freedom to roam around out in the country every day. We were taught right from wrong by being punished for little civil infractions. If you even made a smartarse comment you might get slapped in the back of the head and chastised. We were well mannered heathens but, we were kids and we ended up doing what kids do.
