Mick Ralphs, Guitarist and Cofounder of Bad Company and Mott the Hoople, Dies at 81 (msn.com)

Mick Ralphs, the guitarist, songwriter, and co-founder of the legendary ‘70s rock bands Bad Company and Mott The Hoople, has died, according to a note from his rep. No cause of death was announced, although he had been in poor health for several years; he was 81.

Paul Rodgers of Free first met Mick Ralphs in 1971. After an inspired jam session and a mutual sharing of songs, Ralphs made the bold decision to leave Mott The Hoople and form a new band with Rodgers, and Bad Company was born. Adding former King Crimson bassist/vocalist Boz Burrell and drummer Simon Kirke, the band was complete. With the help of Led Zeppelin's legendary manager Peter Grant, Bad Company became the first band signed to Zeppelin's Swan Song label.

The group's success was meteoric. Their 1974 self-titled debut went five-times platinum, producing classic hits like "Can't Get Enough" and "Movin' On," alongside electrifying rock anthems such as "Ready for Love," "Rock Steady," and the title track "Bad Company."

In a fitting tribute to the band's enduring influence, Bad Company will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year in 2025.

“Bowie gave them the song but Mick wrote the intro — the lick of all licks”: Joe Elliott's tribute to Mick Ralphs

In 1972, at the height of the glam rock era, British band Mott The Hoople had their biggest hit with the classic anthem All The Young Dudes.

The song was written by David Bowie — but a big part of its magic came from the intro created by Mott guitarist Mick Ralphs.
Ralphs died this week at the age of 81. He was renowned not only for his work with Mott The Hoople but also with Bad Company, who had a string of hit albums in the late ’70s.[Image: ChevronRightWhiteBold.svg]

Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott is a longtime admirer of Ralphs’ playing — and cites All The Young Dudes as his favourite song of all time.

Elliott tells MusicRadar: “Mick was one of the kindest souls that I’ve ever met. When Mott reformed in 2009 and 2013 I went to every gig. I got to hang out with Mick before and after the shows. He always had time for a chat.”

He says of All The Young Dudes: “Bowie gave them the song but Mick wrote the intro, and it’s astonishing. It’s a very classical piece rather than a blues-based lick, which is something that Mick would be more studied in. And it’s the lick of all licks.

“You hear the beginning of that song and — boom! It was a revelation for a whole new generation of kids.
“It’s a massive contribution to music in general but to me it was absolutely unbelievable.”

This song reminds me of my grandfather and summertime.
I first heard it when helping him paint his house a hot July day.
He was big on nothing but old country & western radio and westerns on tv.
