Sounds correct.

I haven't gotten a refund in 20 years since becoming self employed but the last time I got one I'm pretty sure it was a direct deposit.

Yes. But some people can request a debit card instead. They expect people to retain the card for any future deposits.
They are trying to save money on printing checks. I think they also want to stop printing Social Security checks.

Work has also stopped printing checks a couple of years ago and required direct deposit.

They already load money on SNAP debit cards every month so it makes sense to do the same for any federal refunds. Some states may not be prepared to issue state tax refunds on debit cards so you may get a check. We’ve always used Turbo Tax and requested refunds be direct deposit. You get your refund quicker that way.

Yes.

You can get your refund on debit card, but you need to have a prepaid debit card account already set up and IRS requires basically the same information for a prepaid card (routing number and account number).

Executive Order signed 3/25/2025 by President DJT

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-...k-account/

Sec. 3.  Phase Out of Paper Check Disbursements and Receipts.  (a)  Effective September 30, 2025, and to the extent permitted by law, the Secretary of the Treasury shall cease issuing paper checks for all Federal disbursements inclusive of intragovernmental payments, benefits payments, vendor payments, and tax refunds, except as specified in section 4 of this order.

Direct deposit is the fastest way to receive a refund. Additionally, in accordance with Executive Order 14247, the IRS began phasing out paper tax refund checks on Sept. 30, 2025, meaning most taxpayers must provide their routing and account numbers to receive refunds directly deposited into their bank accounts.

More info on refund options here:  IRS

If you have a prepaid debit card, you may be able to have your refund deposited to the card. Many reloadable prepaid cards have account and routing numbers that you can provide to the IRS. Check with the financial institution to ensure your card can be used and to obtain the routing number and account number, which may be different from the card number.
