Well, ya' don't need a rooster if all ya' want is eggs.

If you want to raise new chicks, you could always 'borrow' a rooster for a day or two.  Wink

Do what you gotta do. Are you limited to a certain number of hens? Don't fret too much about the rooster. Make acquaintances with someone who raises chickens so you can get replacement hens when yours quit laying.

I can only have 6 hens. The bad part is a $300 non refundable application fee for the permit.
I think one of my Spanish speaking friends might take the roosters. They never stop crowing during the day. That’s what got me the complaint. He’s out there raising Cain right now… Chuckle

Wow! They really don't want people to have chickens.
6 hens, laying an average of 250 eggs per year divided by $300. That's roughly $2.40 a dozen. Not too bad an investment. They will have paid off the permit in a year.

If society fell apart, we - the people would build a new one. Most people are good at their core, and when we see things that are wrong we work to fix them together. Make friends with your neighbors, get involved with your community - because we will rebuild our lives, our communities, from horrible circumstances we always will.

if you put a sock over their head when they are molting (june/july) you can put them on their back in your lap and pull the down easily, to save for pillows.

They are great. Very hardy and will help reduce parasite load on other animals. Good effect on pastures too. They help scare off small predators. They can be rendered for high quality cooking oil which is very useful. Not too hard, good animal to add.

... they're grazers - provided their pasture is good enough, they don't need any supplemental grain to thrive. That's the main reason we're interested in them.
