It really killed me to realize Hellmann's now uses bio-engineered ingredients, just a couple months back. It's what I grew up on, what my Mom insisted on for her potato salad.  It's texture had been unsurpassed out of every may on the market. I stopped buying it.

Duke's is VERY good. Surely you know of it being in the south? Watched a video years back "Sh#t Southern Women Say" - "She didn't use Duke's mayonnaise." Right after that I purchased 2 jars off their website. While I thought the flavor was excellent, just didn't have that Hellman's texture.

Tried to buy some half a few months back, and they were sold out on Amazon, and I just couldn't justify the price on their website for some reason. During the Amazon search another brand came up that had excellent reviews Blue Plate. I think I'll try that next.

Duke's is the House Mayo of the South.

I've never liked it ~ not so much texture, but the taste sux.

I haven't tried Blue Plate in a long time, but will.

Some time back, the missus was comparing ingredient labels between Hellmann's and some off-brand mayo ~ damned if the ingredient percentages weren't identical.  As I recall, the taste was okay ~ but danged if I can recall what store-brand it was.  (It may have been a brand also made ny Hellmann;s, which would mean it's GMO, too.)  I'll have to do some label reading.    V6sRZf4  Most important thing to look for is the GMO tag.

I don't use Hellmann's mayo .... but I think the ingredients here are different to the US (actually the one we get here seems to be produced in Spain).

I always buy one made in Poland (I actually enjoy many Polish condiments) called "Winiary Mayonnaise Majonez" (and yes I know the owning company is evil but which aren't?)

Actually, Odie ~ due to the seed oil issue I decided to see if there were mayos made with avocado oil and sure enuff there are!

[Image: 51-K9cRrrjL.jpg] Have never seen it in the stores, so I added it to my Amazon Subscribe & Save ~ very reasonably priced ~ 30oz jar less than 4 bux.  Cheaper than most mayos these days topping well over 5 bux a jar.

Only found a couple so far in the UK .... one at Tesco (large supermarket chain, don't know if you have them there) .... Dr Wills Avocado Oil Mayonnaise .... but it is £3.90 for 175g (6.2oz)

   ~  Yeah, there were some ridiculously priced avocado versions on Uncle Jeff's U.S. site as well.

Beyond the oil, egg yolk and acid (vinegar or lemon/lime juice) that are the time honored components of mayo ~ the seasonings such as mustard, etc., can give a boost or not ~ there's no accounting for taste.  Jptdknpa  


The "seed" oils DO have a taste and either ya' like it or ya' don't.  Avocado oil is as nearly neutral tasting as it gets ~ and ya' have to have a mouthful of only that in yer mouth to get a "taste" at all ~ a vague buttery or nut taste is all I come away with.

Avocado oil is lower in calories than the seed oils and it is mostly monosaturated and offers the Omega-3 that is lacking in most diets, as compared to the Omega-6 overload seed oils bring to the table.  But I'm not worried about HEALTHY fat ~ I avoid fake fats and trans fats like the plague. 

Let's face it ~ there are only three macro nutrients available:  protein, fat and carbs.  That's it.  Humans can survive without carbs very easily ~ in fact, peeps have survived on only whale blubber for over a year with no ill health effects.  Humans were hunters long before they were farmers.  They survived ice ages and meteors eating only protein and fat from animal kills and scavenging seasonal yummies hanging from trees.

Ya' can make yer own mayo ~ if yer very patient.   Eyeroll  But, why when there are commercial products?

Keep looking for an affordable alternative!  You'll prolly have an easier time gettin' yer mitts on one in Europe versus the culinary ass-end of the world I live in.

You can make you own mayo in minutes if you have a stick blender - loads of vids on YT...
Was at the grocery this afternoon and just for grins & giggles I checked out the mayonnaise offerings...  (Looking for avocado.)

Didn't find any with avos, but I DID find some with Olive Oil.  I picket up a small jar of the Hellmann's ~ was less than 5 bux as I recall.
